Security for the building project of the century
Securiton and Securitas both made important contributions during the construction of the mammoth Gotthard Base Tunnel.
Many of the security solutions from Securiton were temporary systems that were used solely during the construction phase. In addition to the SLS-Pro security management system, video and intercom systems were set up at the installation sites and tunnel entrances, while Securitas staff handed out up to 2,000 badges to workers. However, Securiton also installed a video surveillance system that was kept in place and taken over by the SBB. 160 cameras kept a watchful eye on the multifunction stations at Sedrun and Faido in the tunnel, while a further four were installed at the tunnel entrances.
Keeping an eye out
The control centres in Rynächt and Biasca were the focal point of the entire construction site and were manned around the clock by Securitas staff. All cables, phone lines and radio and PC connections came together here. If something happened, the Securitas staff on duty here immediately implemented the necessary measures according to the security manual. The Securitas staff at the control centres made badges for each worker on the construction site. These also functioned as transmitters and had to be worn at all times. The badges were subsequently fitted with RFID technology and also served as an intelligent localisation system. In an emergency, the on-duty Securitas staff and emergency service personnel could then find out at any time how many people were still in the tunnel and, more importantly, where they were at that moment.
In addition to the control centres in Biasca and Rynächt, Securitas was also present at the building site near Sedrun and the installation site there. Securitas staff checked where the workers lived in the temporary living quarters and that they adhered to security guidelines. The Securitas staff also ensured that occupational safety measures were kept at the site entrance and during the workday on the building site.
