Waste incineration plant Renergia Perlen

Securitas Group protects Renergia building site

It is one of the biggest building projects seen in Central Switzerland in recent years. Renergia is a state-of-the-art, environmentally compatible waste incineration plant located between Lucerne and Zug in Perlen/ Root. The use of the latest technologies and its exemplary energy efficiency are the defining features of this major project. With their security systems, Securitas and Securiton are playing a valuable role in the success of the project.

The small village of Perlen in the municipality of Buchrain has a certain degree of fame thanks to Perlen Papier AG, a major producer of paper for magazines and newspapers on the Swiss and European market. Situated directly on the Reuss canal between Lucerne and Zug and with connections to the motorway and railway network, this site is also of economic importance. The decision by all waste associations in Central Switzerland to build the new Renergia waste incineration plant directly next to Perlen Papier AG was thus an easy one.

Combining disposal and production

When planning a new waste incineration plant, the focus is now not only on waste disposal. These plants are also used to produce electricity and supply heat. In addition to the disposal of 200 000 tons of waste, the Renergia plant will also supply the neighbouring paper factory with steam from January 2015 onwards. This waste heat will save Perlen Papier AG an estimated 40 million litres of heating oil per year. Steam will also be used for producing electricity to supply up to 38 000 households with power.

Comprehensive security

The ground-breaking ceremony for the Renergia plant took place in autumn 2012. Since then, an average of 200 specialists from across Europe work on the massive building site each day – with this number rising to 500 on peak days. Their security is extremely important for the site management team, which is why Securitas was assigned the task of realising the access and entry control concept. The main focus for Securitas is on checking the authorisation of all employees and carrying out security training for new employees. The security specialists ensure that everything is carried out in accordance with the applicable laws.
In order to be able to check access to the building site in detail, Securiton installed two turnstiles at the staff entry point and equipped them with access readers. Barriers with access readers were also installed at the entrance for building site traffic. Cameras were installed at critical points across the entire site, with the images monitored in the central office by the on-duty Securitas security specialists. The entire access control system is also managed from the central office. In addition to ensuring the appropriate access control, Securitas is also responsible for night surveillance, safety training, ensuring safety at work across the entire site, area monitoring and other security services.
Thanks to the exceptional cooperation between Securitas and Securiton, the project was successfully implemented and is now a valuable reference for the joint partnership between both Group companies in Lucerne.
