Top-class fire protection for legendary hotel complex

Midway through the 20th century, this mountainous location overlooking Lake Lucerne was the place to be for international jet-setters. With breathtaking views of Lucerne and the Alps, the hotel complex on the legendary Bürgenstock offered the ideal retreat. Thanks to investors from Qatar, the hotel complex has now been completely renovated. The recently completed Bürgenstock Resort is now the largest integrated hotel resort in Switzerland. It was clear that a hotel and tourism hub of this calibre also required a fire alarm system of the highest quality – which is where Securiton came in.

The resort consists of 30 buildings. These include four hotels with between three and five stars and a total of 383 rooms: the Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa (5* Superior), Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence (5*), Palace Hotel & Conferences (4* Superior) and Taverne 1879 (3*). The resort also includes 67 “residence suites”, 10 restaurants and bars, and numerous sport and leisure facilities.

Top-class fire protection

A hotel resort situated on an exposed mountain ridge demands the highest levels of quality and reliability when it comes to fire protection. The hotel operator decided on the modern, sophisticated fire detection and fire alarm system from Securiton for protecting the entire resort against fire. A total of 25 SecuriFire 3000 fire alarm control panels were installed during the construction phase, which lasted several years. Very few fire detection systems provide such reliable protection as this system. Indeed, all its components – from the microprocessor to the operating system – have been duplicated. If the active system fails, the secondary system seamlessly takes over full operations – even if the fire detection system is damaged due to several breaks in its wiring.

In order for the SecuriFire 3000 control panels to be able to trigger an alarm, they have to receive reliable information on possible occurrences of fire. A veritable army of SecuriStar MCD 573 X combined heat and smoke detectors provide this life-saving data. When a fire starts, smoke and/or heat is generated. The over 5,000 fire detectors installed in the Bürgenstock Resort adapt automatically to the prevailing ambient temperatures thanks to their intelligent design. In some of the hotels, the rooms are also equipped with MCD 573 X-S and MCD 573 X-SP multi-sensor smoke and heat detectors. These have an additional audible alarm function, either with four different alarm sirens (-S) or voice information (-SP).

The Securiton fire protection solution on the Bürgenstock is rounded off by 390 manual call points and 349 sirens. Moreover, a single-zone extinguishing system was also installed in the server room of the hotel resort. The six nitrogen cylinders provided by Securiton subsidiary Contrafeu had to be transported to the data centre via the staircase as the lift had not yet been installed at this time. Given that the cylinders weigh over 100 kg each, this was certainly no walk in the park.
