Sitem Insel AG
Innovative fire protection system for scientific progress in the medical competence centre.
The fascinating sitem insel AG building is located right next to the renowned Inselspital and houses the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine. This research facility of national importance aims to establish Bern as a leading international location for medical technology and a pharmaceutical/biotech industry that is growing rapidly. “sitem” stands for Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine. The term “translation” is used in biomedicine when findings from basic research and industrial development are transferred to clinical applications. Specifically, this means that medical technology products or new substances are being used in humans for the first time in order to evaluate their efficacy, suitability and cost-effectiveness with the aim of commercialising them. The building, which consists mainly of glass facades, comprises two basement floors, a ground floor and four upper floors with a total area of around 22,000 m².
Fire safety for research.
The building interior features a harmonious interplay of technological solutions to prevent the outbreak of fire. Our state-of-the-art SecuriFire alarm system hosts 1500-plus SecuriStar combined smoke and heat detectors, nine SecuriBeam ILIA linear smoke detectors and two SecuriSmoke ASD aspirating smoke detectors. In addition, our sister company Contrafeu AG installed a sprinkler system comprising 3900 sprinkler heads, which is also controlled by our SecuriFire alarm system. Various extinguishing systems are ready for use in an emergency, such as wet alarm valves in the office wing, wet systems with antifreeze admixture in the car parking area, and preaction valves in the laboratory area. A truly futuristic interplay of protection for this medical institution.
